yes, just like you said your dvd player is the source, so is your converter box, for the sake of your questiong the stb and dvd player are the same thing, digital encoding is decoded and output to your television. as far as the analog portion of your channel lineup (assuming you use catv) i wouldn't expect any improvement at all.
