HDMI is digital and capable of delivering a 1080x1920 picture whereas S-video and all other wires are analog and only capable of 480x640. Component can do 1080 but its not the best means of signal transfer. HDMI also carries sound and video on one wire, making for a much cleaner home theater with fewer wires.
