I worked in-house and yes, it is about the numbers. When my daughter almost died and I needed to be with her, they treated me like gold. HR called to advise me of all the services that were available to us and wished me to return as soon as I could. I also ended up with serious health problems which the MSO took care of. They held my job for me for as long as was legally possible. Some people cried when I had to leave.
The friends I made visited me and my daughter all of the time bearing gifts and good cheer (prayers). It was a family atmosphere when I worked there. I am with a contractor now, and would not expect even a little sympathy if I went thought the same situation with them. Although as a contractor you make more money, there is a huge trade off both ways.
