You are partly correct, the color code you used was for 568B there is also 568A that is the same except the green and orange pairs are reversed. and when you wish to make a "crossover" cable you terminate one end as 568A and the other end as 568B.

there are other cable codes, such as ISOC that i don't recall their order because i don't work with them, but basically, when wiring keep it the same at both ends the same unless your needs are different.
