Strict Polish Catholic upbringing. I grew up in my childhood thinking you only drank alcohol on holidays or special occasions!
We could watch TV only an hour a day, in the evening, just to unwind before bedtime. Never had a TV in our bedrooms even in my teen years, and still don't to this day...and we were outside the majority of the time, if not in school or sleeping....imagine that. Fresh air. Wow. Bet today's kids couldn't handle that, they would go into withdrawal without their videos. Your mom sounds like she was a wise woman also. You must miss her very much.
