you pissed someone off, or the area is flush with techs. or maybe you just didn't hustle enough for the powers that be. i've seen many a knowledgeable and skilled "veteran" get the shaft because he wouldn't kill himself for what a younger guy would do without thinking twice. i'm not knocking you, but your story sounds odd. after 6 months i was making 1200 a week, giving up 8.5% to the sub i worked for and being in the position of him getting the choice routes. it's not a knock, but someone that retired union coming to contract installs would be suspect to me, and yes, i've been in the position of firing an old dawg i liked because he made my days hell. didn't like it.
