Sounds like your just running out of signal. What are minimum inputs a receiver will work on? With 2 diplexers/splitters in line thats 10db of loss any way you cut them. You could be getting ingress from old wiring but a tv needs at least a 0db input to have a chance. I imagine your inputs may be so low to the noise floor that your seeing the noise floor with the picture. The other advice on the splitters/combiners are the rules I also follow and do work used as combiners, the loss is the same.
