It sounds as if the splitter is a poor quality (Ferrite Bead) not board circuitry.
Easy way to tell is:
If the back of the splitter is bonded to the body with epoxy get rid of it
If the back and body are bonded with solder this is generally a quality unit.
The ferrite beads will saturate due to channel loading and level causing the problem you describe
