I am certain that every generation thought that their generation was about to experience the end of time. The Christians a few hundred years after the death of Jesus were being persecuted by the Romans and thought the end was near, the dark ages, the plague, World War II, the Cold War, etc...
Although the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists have recently moved the Doomsday Clock two minutes closer to midnight, it has been closer in the past. The blizzard in Oklahoma was not really that bad, people were just unprepared for it. You can live through almost anything if you are properly prepared for it.
