Your post is full of contradictions. First you said you've never used a Bird Dog, but then you say that the signal is lower on the receiver than what the Bird Dog reads.
You also said you've been doing sat's for 6 years and then you said that you're the only woman that's been around for 12 yrs. So which is it?
I think you should actually use a Bird Dog for two weeks and then try and go two weeks with just your buddy and the radios.
I don't know how much your "partner" skims off the top of your check to tell you when you have signal, but it's got to be way more, over time than the cost of the Bird Dog.
A properly calibrated Bird Dog will give you actual signal levels. Also remember that the signal meter on the receiver ONLY measures the signal to noise ratio.
An advanced satellite meter will save you time and make you more money than a guy on a radio. I guess that's where they got the name for the Sat Buddy meter because it took his job.
