It is indeed interesting to see some comment on the Bar about the difference quality mapping can have on proper design and construction. Thanks Duck and Cdog for weighing in! Just like all other skilled workers in this industry, career cable mappers have ridden the rollercoaster of economic boom and bust through the years. Many long for the "good old times" when they could walk an entire town themselves, without having to be indirectly responsible for someone else's mistakes or inabilities. There is no doubt, Cdog, that having a mapping project "supervisor" not know what an EQ looks like is a sorry indicator of the crappy design you'll be seeing on your maps! Even sadder...many of those idiots are now sub-primes on major projects. The fact of the matter is that mapping just hasn't meant enough to MSO's to warrent paying enough for a quality walkout, and construction crews are always left to correct the deficiencies on their prints.
Once was a time, Duck, when we had to circle the address of the property where the UG ped was located. Unfortunately, that circle of ink got in the way of a whole bunch of information on drafted design maps, so many of those bits of info never made it back to the field in your hands. We got more precise descriptions of the back-to-back privacy fence situation you mention, i.e. "Denver". And as we usually get paid per mile of forward production, we know exactly what you mean about finding the equipment!! Time is money, and access is everything!! Through recent years, we've had to work with base maps that can actually be missing most of the streets in the field...so now we got 18 year old speed mappers trying to draw as well as think. Scary! So many other attributes of quality in our cable skill can be linked with experience AND the ability to continue learning how to be better. There's always more to learn!!
I appreciate you guys pointing out a few things that need VAST improvement in the mapping area. Believe me, the able walkout people out here know what you mean. Merry Christmas, bros. See you down the line somewhere!
