Simple mathematical equasion.
Say a prime gets paid $75 for an HSI install. Said prime works out of either their house or some crap-hole office having some drug addict flunkie turned project manager meet the guys who provide their own ragtag fleet of vehicles, GLI, workmans comp, tools, gas, pay for t-shirts with the company name printed on them, etc. and then kicks back roughly 40% to the "techs"/"contractors".
Now at $75 a pop the MSO wants dedicated lines, new fittings, hardware, readings at tap, GB, modem, tags, etc. understandable at $75 a pop. Problem is the grunt doing the actual work is getting $30 a pop to drive to the location and if they are blessed the sub is actually home, then they must hang a new drop for $5 (cause the old one is pigtail 59) big suprise, perform all the hardware changes per SOW, call and wait for dispatch to add the modem to the subs account, wait while the subs antiquated virus ridden PC takes 3 minutes to open internet explorer, send out birth certificates and other crap to the mso to prove it's up and running, ....but wait ! your upstream is 58db, downstream is +14 db after a -9 dc tap, and signal to noise is at 28, and this is on all new lines and hardware from the tap in so now you have to wait on hold with dispatch again while you get permission to get a line ticket to send in with the birth cerificate and now realize you have spent 2.5 hours on a 45 minute job and you still have 2 more 8-12's and it's 11:26 because the hungover project manager didnt reorganize the routes and hand them out till 8:27 and then you had to get in line to get equipment, but ! because dispatch messed up you now discover that you have equipment on your truck that was not supposed to be removed from the subs house and must call dispatch again to have the equipment removed before you can be issued equipment for the day.
Sound familiar ? Just a day in the life for most.. Thank god I havent worked like that for awhile....but I know many that still do.
