One other point I would like to add, if I could.
If you do let go of a subcontractor for shoddy performance, then please do NOT re-hire them back. For one, he'll never take you seriously about your expectations, and secondly, the other subcontractors who pride themselves on good work have a tough time getting in the door due to the "good ol' boy" network.
