"The general industry recommendation is to set 64-QAM carriers approximately 10
dB down from adjacent analogs, and 256-QAM carriers approximately 6 dB down.
That's measuring and comparing the average power level of the QAM carrier
with the peak power of the analog carrier.

One primary reason to set QAM carriers at this level is because peak power
excursions of the QAM modulation (outer constellation points) are 5 to 7 dB
greater than average excursions. Ron Hranac penned an excellent article on
this subject in his CT Magazine column a year or two ago.
