There is another side of that story.
For example, Directv mandated that HSP's reform to 80% inhouse employees and 20% sub contractors. This creates a huge expense for the HSP. Now they have to buy fleets of trucks, gas for those trucks, installation materials, cell phones, WC insurance for each tech, more taxes, hire more supervisors, etc.
So what do they do to make up the loss? They cut the rates on the contractors. Now we pay for all those nice new vans and we don't get to drive them. In my system it is inhouse employees that are killing us. Sure they get some cheasy benefits and a new van to drive but their rates are so low it is pathetic. The tax benefits of being a contractor are what makes it still worthwile. I could never live on the inhouse salary. I don't care what they have to do to classify me as a contractor, it's the only way I'll survive.
