I teach people how to splice fiber (specifically FTTP, the fiber to the home/premises) and splicing fiber is fairly easy, it's the equipment cost and materials cost that's the issue. If you want to get into fiber optics it's generally a good idea to have someone walk you though it, you don't need 'formal' training, although it helps, but again, it's expensive. Long story short, you need to know someone to get into fiber optic work. It is going to be the future in cabling, especially to the home. Copper is going to become extinct.
