No Directv reciever has to have a phone line to work. Not a DVR, HD, HD DVR, etc....
DVR's powered by TiVo required one call out on a phone line to be activated. After that, it can function properly without a phone line.
The customer gets more bang for the buck by ordering PPV's from directv.com via the internet than any other ordering medium. When a customer order's PPV's throught the website, all recievers are allowed to watch the PPV event ordered. This is the only way all recievers will recieve the PPV event. If the customer uses a remote, only the 1 reciever will recieve the event. This is also the same for call-in PPV's, except there is a $5 service fee on top of the PPV fee.
