Funny you should laugh about that. Worked for a company in Wyoming - Tech Op Manager told me that he required his people to do it that way - inside out - even on brick. Never did that before. A crew member trying to do the right thing drilled that way - they fired him that day. Had to fix a lady's dry wall. He could not drill through the brick and did not have sense enough to drill out to in to miss the brick to hit the mortar. Poor Guy.
