I am in the real world, and I was a member of a union, and, I run into union people all the time. I am all for everyone getting the best deal they can, but I feel that is the wrong way to go from my experience Dont you want to hear both arguments before you make a life changing choice? You may think unions are a good way to make change, but change starts as an individual. You control your own destiny, unless you are a mindless puppet who has to be instructed every step of the way. If you have no control make an effort to get it. I like to come and go as I please, and I don't mind working extra hours if need be. What I am telling you is all from real life experience in both fields, and a few others. Some unions are good, but most are a bunch of thugs, who show up at non-union job sites and try to push people around....."We are shutting this job down, this is a union shop"! Thats a bunch of BS, if it were then why are we doing the work? If the job is union shop, the guys get prevailing wage even when they are non-union. Most customers would rather give us the money they would pay the union anyway, just to be treated better, and not live in constant fear of lawsuits and strikes. No one wants to walk on egg shells all day. Most people just want to earn a living. I think it is very oppressing to have to do everything exactly how the union says, and so do the customers. If I wanted to join a gang, hey I am in LA, I am sure someone will jump me in, then I can protect the revenue they make by pushing others around in the neighborhood. To me it is the same thing. But you can do what ever you feel you have to to get the best for yourself and your family. As for me, the best solution is to work independent. Good Luck to you. I am done with this subject.
