You can splice strand [messenger wire] with a preform splice or use an expensive strand link / pickle. It all depends on the location, terrain, etc. You wouldn't want to use a splice over interstate hwy, railroad, waterways, down guy, etc. The price of messenger is around .10c/ft for 1/4 EHS. A pickle is around $5.50 each..... Get the picture.
