I've heard these type stories before. During one hurricane aftermath, relief agencies got so many clothes donated that they paid someone to haul them off. The company that hauled the used clothing off just turned them into rags for resale.
Personally, I just send money after making triple sure the charity is legitimate. People can always use money.
