I can understand the frustration you must have felt -- I received a memo from our local Red Cross last week and in the memo was the following statement --
"Reminder:
Please note that the American Red Cross does not accept or collect individual in-kind donations during the time of disaster. Both Emergency Management and the American Red Cross discourage collection of items. In past disasters, donations of items such as clothing and food have formed a backlog that actually impeded relief efforts. At this time, the only in-kind donations that are able to consider are shipments of bulk, palletized, shrink-wrapped, stackable items. Shipments are unloaded with forklifts from semis and loaded onto distribution trucks. Unloading, sorting, and distributing individual items is not practical in a disaster of this magnitude.
Offers of bulk in-kind donations can be directed to (-REDACTED-) ."
The clergy person should have been more knowledgeable and sensitive and then explained the situation and helped you with an alternative solution instead of turning you away.
