Good Luck

Contracting is dead! No money left. Why do it? In house pays $15 to $27 dollars an hour and management runs 60k to 180k a year. Unless you’re working for Charter. Boyan from Comcast told me when he was in-house he was getting 180k a year! I'm in-house now and I'm bringing down 85k a year, health/dental insurance, 401k, 2 weeks paid vacation company phone, truck and gas. Best of all if I don’t get anything done today I still get paid. Put down the bong and you too can get a job. When your on the road in a roach motel think the cost a week $100 fuel, $210 hotel, Truck $200 (rusty beater), Cell phone $50, INS (Truck, WC, GL) $50, that is $610 a week not including if you have to buy or calibrate test gear and tools. If you made $15 dollars an hour and worked 60+ hours a week you wood make $1,150 a week gross. You get overtime in an in-house job. Yea, some dumb ass will say “but after taxes” you have to pay taxes either way. Or you can screw the IRS either way, just claim 5 dependents if you like getting you money now and pay later. You would have to make 1760 a week contracting = less than $15 an hour. And hope to God you get paid, take the amount you did not get paid and divided it by 52 and that is that much additional loss. Example a job burns you $6,000 (one slow month) is a loss of over $115 a week. Now you have to make 1870 a week to match that $15 dollar an hour guy you’re making fun of. Except he has health INS and a 401K, he wakes up and knows he has a job and when work is slow he has a job. Another benny is he gets to hang out at where ever he calls home at night; there is something nice about being home. When you’re on the road it’s as if life passes you by. Your old friend goes on living their live and you are always on the road wanting to go home. As soon as you get to poking something you like you have to split town for the next project. The only friends you have are cable guys, not so bad but the eventually they go home and your friends are peppered across the country (I know). When contracting paid 2-5k a week we were young (20’s) there was no better job, work was plenty full from 1990-2001 and we prayed for down time. The industry was fueled off cocaine, pot, and stripers. But Bush and the Christians rule, drugs are bad, people don’t pay, and if they do you’re lucky if you can make 2k a week, work is far and few. Screw it, get a real job. I will mis it.
