The filter is used so you do not over drive the input to the analyzer. Not only should you worry about the level input on the channel under test, but also the total power into analyzer. On an 8591C it usually may say (See More Info) after the test is done it will tell you either raise/reduce input or preselect input.. If you get this message the test is not accurate.
