Don't fool yourself

A national sales tax is the worst way to go. The poorest people spend all of their income, while the richest spend only a small percentage. The poor would pay tax on 100 percent of their income, while the rich would pay tax on only a small percentage. You call that fair?

The only fair tax is a flat-rate income tax. Richard Armey proposed one in 1994. Everyone pays a flat rate of 17 percent, with a 30,000 dollar per year deduction. Anyone making less than 30k per year would pay nothing, and you can file your taxes with a form the size of a post card. Guess what? His proposal never even made it to the house floor. Go figure.
