You might also consider picking up a job doing "as builts" (redlines) for one of the subs from the FTTx projects. It pays ok, depending on the subs and would give you a start in the FTTx industry. You will be able to ask more industry specific questions in your class as it pertains to your area, learn the lingo and become familiar with the major players. I know it's kind of grunt work, but sometimes a small step back can make a big step forward if you play your cards right. Best of luck, and I hope whatever route you choose works out well for you.
