John Paul Yen, 26, was working in Watonga in Blaine County when the accident occurred.
Yen, an ironworker, was helping install additional cable on a tower half a mile outside Watonga when the incident occurred, said Joe Woosley, Blaine County sheriff's deputy.
Yen was about 50 to 60 feet up on the tower.
"He was moving up the tower, lost his footing and his hold and plunged approximately 50 feet. He fell on top of a maintenance building," Woosley said. "I ruled it completely as an accident."
Yen was a 1996 graduate of Fort Gibson High School. He excelled in chemistry and physics. He also played soccer and liked to hunt and fish.
Tuesday's accident was not the first involving the company, Woosley said.
"I do know this was the second accident this particular crew had in the last year," he said.
Another worker was just below Yen, and two more workers were on the ground. Woosley did not know the name of the company for whom Yen was working.
Yen was taken to Watonga Municipal Hospital and was later sent to the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner's Office in Oklahoma City.
The results of the investigation being conducted by the medical examiner are pending, said Kevin Rowland, chief investigator at the medical examiner's office.
Services for Yen are pending with Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
