Re: Mastec North America

First off, lets clear up some mis-conceptions; the union is the employees. Its not some "third party" whose main goal is that of a dues collection agency.

In my union (NABET-CWA) the employees decided what goes into their contract, they decide what is important, and while we might make suggestions that are helpful, ultimately, the employees decide their own destiny. Plus the union can't sign off on any contract that the employees have rejected; its in our by-laws. Thats part of the checks and balances that we have to keep the power in the hands of the members.

One of the biggest problems facing people today is having the ability to believe in each other and you are correct that much of the mindset is to "take care of myself first" which is unfortunate as if people worked collectively as a group, they would be much better off financially and job-wise. People need to have faith in the process and be willing to take the risks associated with raising standards in the workplace. Afterall, much of what we enjoy today was made possible by the sacrifices made by people 70-80 years ago.

One thing is for sure; if you sit back and do nothing, your going to work under the conditions that you currently work; they could get better or they could get worse; or if you organize, you can make a change for the better.
