Re: Proper grounding (DTV install)

We set our own appointments so we weed the Apartments out. We tell them that we can’t roll unless their apartment complex verifies that there is a legal ground point that we will be allowed to run our cables to that point. We require this in writing before we will set the appointment. Nine out of ten are never heard from again.

The answer about grounding at an apartment complex is easy; you must ground to NEC, every time, no matter what. Our SBCA instructor said that apartments are considered “temporary” installs and need not be grounded, WRONG! He, of course, wouldn’t put that in writing!

The point about the ground wire between the dish and the ground block being over 20’ is a common misunderstanding. The ground wire that must be 20’ or less is the one between the ground block and the grounding point. The length of the ground between the dish and the ground block doesn’t matter as long as it’s the same length as the coax.

Whatever you do, don’t ground to any ol’ cold water pipe! You could severely injure or kill someone! Cold water ground must be on the main pipe coming into the home, must be within 5’ of where that pipe enters the ground, must be all metal, and that pipe must be all metal and under ground for at least 10’.
