To answer some of your remaining questions:

Someone touched on this during the thread: A multi-switch is not UL rated as a grounding device. So, regardless of the connectors involved, a ground block must still be used.

The liability for lightning damage to a properly installed system is completely on the customer. Period. If the system is installed in accordance with the NEC, the installer cannot be held responsible for lightning damage. If the system is NOT installed in accordance with the NEC, the installer is responsible.

As far as being "told of a situation", it is nothing more than old wives' tales. If a system would be better protected by not grounding it, the NEC would not require a ground. Anyone telling you any differently is flat wrong.
