because the industry as a whole would go under!

Man, if they tested every ignorant bastard that thought they could be a technician - nothing would ever get done.

People have thier niche... some never belong behind a lasher, coring tool, meter, splicer or an analyzer - or a freaking crimp tool for that matter.

I'll probably get flamed for this but it boils down to numbers - like everything. It does not take a lot of knowledge to hang cable, splice it, get the return working with a decent pv, or install a modem and wire a house. It takes the knowledge to do it right and efficiently.

Unfortunately, most MSO's and primes do not care if it is done right, as long as it gets done and they can sell high speed internet and beat the sat guys to it.

I have been part of many million dollar "bandaids" and this is my take on the industry. If people had to be tested and certified, half the workforce would be gone (and some of those would be good people)

Hell, the best lineman I've ever seen smoked more pot than I thought the human body could take. BUT, he never was late, he always got the job done, he was a professional in the field, and most importantly - it was done right.

The CATV industry will always have the hack contractors because it takes about one in 5 to 10 people to have to know what they are doing and, most importantly to said contractors, it is cheaper.

When the problems get too bad, they pass the buck, and blame it on a freshly fired sub. When they get found out, they move to a different area. When they get caught up to by the people they were leaving, or they run out of places to go, they file bankruptcy and start over with a new name.

And, here is the best part, the MSO's deal with it... because in the end... they get thier numbers.

Standard CATV practice.
you need to have enough wisdom to keep from making the wrong decisions but enough courage to make the right ones
