From a technical standpoint, DirecTV and Dish Network are identical. The differences in multi-switch configurations are primarily for number of polarities used, and number of receivers connected. Each polarity is, for all practical purposes, identical. The elliptical "dishes" allow the system to receive multiple satellites at once, each satellite having multiple polarities.
A simple, mostly unimportant, difference between Dish and DirecTV is the type of signal sent from the receiver to the multi-switch in order to cause it to switch. DirecTV uses a 22 KHz "tone", while Dish uses a digital signal. The multi-switch is a "switch inside a switch". The LNB of the dish is powered by 12 volts from the receiver. A voltage above around 16 (normally 18) volts will cause the LNB to also "switch" to the other polarity. With multiple LNBs, the multi-switch is used to switch between LNBs. The "tone" or digital signal causes the multi-switch to "switch" between LNBs, while the 13/18 volts, as appropriate, "switches" the LNB.
In the end, this is a rather complicated way of explaining something very simple. :)
