cable box

Why do some tv's need a cable box and some don't? I had a rather old tv that did not need a cable box to get the basic cable channels. I replaced it with a new tv and it will only get some of the channels unless I used it with a cable box. I'm just curious, what makes the difference in the sets? Thanks, Joe
