Attorney General Mike Beebe sued a Texas company Tuesday for allegedly making telemarketing calls to Arkansans registered with the federal do-not-call list.
State and federal registration on the do-not-call list began last fall and the lawsuit is the first to allege violation of the list.
Beebe sued Christopher J. Fischer and his Dallas company, Advantage Satellite, which is where the calls originated. Beebe alleges the company, using the name Satellite Solutions, made telemarketing calls to at least 127 Arkansans without trying to find out if they had registered for the do-not-call list.
The Federal Trade Commission has received 127 complaints from Arkansans on the do-not-call list who received calls from Satellite Solutions.
"This is how the state and federal telephone-privacy laws are meant to work," Beebe said. "The FTC's expanded resources for tracking these complaints have strengthened our case against this defendant, and we are able to file charges under state and federal law to protect the privacy of Arkansans."
The attorney general also said Fisher and his company were in violation of the Arkansas Consumer Telephone Privacy Act.
Anyone wishing to sign up for the do-not-call list or file a complaint can call 888-382-1222 or by going to www.donotcall.gov.
