Fundamental info for installers has to include knowledge of cable attenuation, that is loss of signal due to cable footage and of course signal drop at splitters. I'll put together a lil' chart for ya and e-mail it later.
To really be on top of your game though, you're going to need a meter! If you buy a used one, be sure to check the last time it was calibrated.
Lastly, exp. is the best teacher but be aware that just getting started you will make mistakes. The Prime I work for Q.C.'s the living crap out of new guys and rarely offers any advanced training.
