Re: Need info from (real) old timers

I started in 78. You hand cranked all your holes for strand, and were expected to be ready when the strand got there. You NEVER let someone jump a pole on you. You passed the lasher (doublelash) with the wire still pulling through the lasher tension rollers, wrapped it around the throughbolt, and squeezed your loop (.750 and .500 or more) with a mullen board. Then you humped your bender and your rollers, while wearing your belt, to get to the next pole (lineman 2) so you could ride the truck while it was pulling the lasher to your next pole. 2-2000' trunk pulls a day off hooks, and then feeder to empty the reels. You walked bell on thick treed out spans because it was faster than using the layup stick. You climbed the layup stick to fix the lasher or get into a tree. On rural strand street runs, you slid down the strand after sagging because it was the fastest way to the truck ( and a hell of a ride). You fixed the slightest cable weewos with the layup stick so it looked like pipe! The tighter the brakes the better.
I could go on.
Splicing! ATC specs were the widely accepted standard.
Gigs were as tight as inches for bugnut and strap placement.
You splicing cosmetics were your ticket to the next job.
Thanx for the trip down memory lane!
