Job Summary:
Seeking applicants for the Ocean City MD area
The Directional Drilling Operator & Locator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of directional drilling equipment for horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects. This position involves setting up and controlling drilling rigs, locating drill heads, and ensuring accuracy during drilling operations. The operator and locator work together to install underground utilities, such as pipelines, fiber optics, and cables, while avoiding existing infrastructure and environmental damage. The ideal candidate has strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
Drilling Operations:
Operate and control directional drilling machinery (rigs, mud motors, etc.) following project specifications.
Ensure accurate drill alignment, entry, and exit points for boring based on job blueprints.
Perform pre- and post-trip equipment inspections and routine maintenance on drilling equipment.
Monitor drilling progress and make adjustments as needed to ensure alignment and depth targets.
Locating and Tracking:
Utilize locating equipment to monitor drill head position, pitch, and depth during drilling.
Identify underground utility paths and any obstacles in the drill path.
Communicate real-time information to the drill operator regarding depth and position of the bore.
Ensure proper calibration and operation of locating equipment.
Project Coordination:
Collaborate with project teams to review job specifications and ensure compliance with engineering plans.
Maintain constant communication between drilling crew and site managers regarding progress, challenges, and adjustments.
Ensure work adheres to local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as company policies.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to safety standards and practices to prevent accidents and damage to existing utilities.
Monitor and control drilling fluid (mud) mixtures to optimize drilling and environmental protection.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment at all times.
Reporting and Documentation:
Maintain accurate records of drilling operations, including location, depth, and any deviations from plans.
Prepare post-job reports detailing drilling results and lessons learned.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Proven experience as a Directional Drilling Operator and/or Locator, preferably in underground utility installation.
Strong knowledge of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) principles and equipment.
Familiarity with underground utility detection and avoidance techniques.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, and utility schematics.
Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
Ability to work in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) preferred.
Skills:
Proficiency in using HDD equipment and tracking systems (e.g., DCI F5, DigiTrak Falcon).
Knowledge of drilling fluids and soil types.
Strong attention to detail and spatial awareness.
Safety-conscious mindset with a commitment to following regulatory guidelines.
Work Environment:
Outdoor work environment with exposure to various weather conditions.
Physical work requiring lifting, standing, bending, and operating heavy machinery.
