Job Description
Summary:
We are looking for Fiber Audit Technicians for conducting a fiber optic network audit, which requires a combination of technical knowledge, practical skills, and understanding of industry standards and safety protocols. An ideal candidate will be able to look at existing records, spreadsheets and validate each leg of a wide-area fiber path. This involves ensuring the correct number of fibers and ports are present and non-intrusive testing of each fiber using an Optical fiber Identifier to verify light is passing the fiber. To accomplish, you will have to find the equipment in the CO/Bldg and verify routing of the fiber to the corresponding patch panels. You will be responsible for your assigned location which could be the A-side (path source), distribution location, or Z-side (termination of path).
Requirements:
Technical Knowledge of Fiber Optics.
Types of Fiber Cables: Familiarity with different types of fiber cables (single-mode, multi-mode) and their respective characteristics and use cases.
Topologies: Knowledge of various network architectures (e.g., point-to-point, ring, star) and how fiber is deployed in these setups.
Cable Handling and Installation: Skills in proper handling, installation, and routing of fiber optic cables to avoid bends, breaks, and signal loss.
Experience with the Testing for presence of light (non-intrusive) using an Optical Fiber Identifier
Troubleshooting Skills: Problem-solving skills to diagnose and identify issues found during the audit, including understanding the causes of different types of fiber optic problems.
Documentation and Reporting:
Record-Keeping: Skills in documenting network configurations, cable routes, splicing records, test results, and other relevant data.
Report Generation: Ability to compile audit findings into provided comprehensive templated reports, highlighting and issues found against existing records.
Safety and Compliance:
Safety Protocols: Knowledge of safety standards and protocols when handling fiber optics, including laser safety.
Industry Standards: Understanding relevant industry standards and regulations (e.g., ANSI/TIA, ISO/IEC) for fiber optic installation and testing.
Communication Skills.
Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively within a team, coordinating with other technicians, engineers, and stakeholders.
Analytical Thinking and Problem-Solving skills:
Attention to Detail: Careful attention to detail to identify even minor documentation issues that could impact network performance.
Problem-Solving: Adaptability to work with different types of networks, equipment, and unexpected challenges that may arise during an audit.
