Re: What's Up With Db Communications

I agree with your point about quality completely...we get paid for a job, complete and TO SPEC. I have been called a hardass by people I've QC'd. Sorry but I don't believe in "good enough". The problem I am talking about is guys becoming "contractors" without the business sense or capitalization to do a job. If I sub a job I am NOT contracting to a prime or a MSO. I am subbing for a contractor. My business relationship is ONLY with him. How he gets paid, when he gets paid or IF he gets paid is none of my business. He hired me to complete work that he can "sell" to the prime and make a profit on it. That is the nature of business. This is a concept that totally escapes the vast majority of contractors, big and small. That's problem #1.
Problem #2 is that there are a number of completely untrustworthy, dishonest people who are taking advantage of working guys trying to make a buck. This industry has degenerated into a ruthless back-stabbing mosh pit. With unqualified newbies trying to undercut established companies, driving down prices, and playing right into Corporate Cables' hands. The scenerio of today looks a lot like the way things were in the mid '80's. The installation contractor world got so crazy that MSO went inhouse with a lot of services...for control over quality and for cost savings. I can't help but think that there will have to be some changes or else the entire infrustructure of the US cable system will be compromised. It's a bad time for cable now that the accountants are running the show. If the contracting business is going to survive there will have to be changes.
