Eulogy

I guess it was appropriate that I was pushing a measuring wheel under a pole line when my cell phone showed the Texas phone number. I knew what it was about, but the familiar voice on the other end still told me that my friend Clark Watts had passed away, at the age of 49, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Although I had known of his condition for nearly all of this year, I'm sure that I reacted to the news with as much shock as anyone who had no clue of Clark's illness.

Clark Watts founded Advanced Cable Services in Georgetown, Texas, and in the process, he created and managed one of the finest design and field service houses in our industry. I had the fortune of working with Advanced for a number of years from the late 1980's, and the most profound impression I had of my entire experience with Advanced centered on the trust and respect that I always received from Clark. In stark contrast to most of the walkouts that I've subcontracted in the last few years, Clark actually sought my advice when formulating his pricing and bids for certain jobs. He always wanted to be fair with his walkout subs and, more often than not, he would bend over backward to accomodate his workers. His relationship with his staff in Texas, as well as his crews in the field, was one of inclusion into the family of friends that he worked and lived with. Clark had a heart that was bigger than Dallas and softer than a marshmallow!

To the Watts family, the entire staff at Advanced, and the countless friends and associates of Clark's, my deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers are with you. We will all mourn the loss of a man who infused a sense of morality into an industry that desperately needs to comprehend human ethics. But, above all, we will celebrate our moments with a man who truly enjoyed our company, and graciously shared so much of his rich life with those he touched.
