My guess is that you are using a newer HP note book, If that is the case you will need to purchase the port replecator for your note book ( Price $149.75 From HP.com ).
You will find that you can purchase a USB to Serial cable to make the connection, but XP will not reconize the driver. They are working on a patch to correct this problem.
