Alot depends on the type of hammer drill. I've used a Hilti the most, but also used a Bosch. The hilti is alot better and has a ground rod chuck, but you also pay more. If you have alot to do it should pay for itself. I've been doing rods for years around Pittsburgh, alot of rock, clay, etc. Usually works as good or better as the old way, plus it saves the arms.
