Trade Association not a union

Most of the dawgs I know don't like unions. They will tell you they are independent contractors. Read or translate that businessmen or women. You might consider going down the same road many other contractors have gone, and form a trade association. You might be aware of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). They represent electrical contractors nationwide both large and small. There is also the National Independent Electrical Contractors Group. You all could do the same only for telecommunications. You could call it the National Independent Cable Contractors Association. These trade association lobby for better working conditions, regulations and compensation at all levels of the food chain. Such things as banning triple level sub contracting or brokering only jobs could be worked on with the customers. Later on if successful you could hire a
spokesperson to do the leg work for the assocaition
