Unfortunately, most of the "fiber optic certification classes" are designed to do nothing more and nothing less than sell you product. They teach you a fair amount of F.O. theory, and then spend alot of time showing you their product (closures, splicers, connectors, whatever), with very little PRACTICAL APPLICATION. Which basically means that the certificate means very little (if anything) to most companies. It's a Catch 22: experience will get you in most everywhere, yet without experience, it's damn near impossible to get in to just about anywhere.
In 11 some years of specialized fiber work, I've found that if you can find someone that's willing to 'take a chance', and take on someone that is green, it's your best bet on breaking into the fiber side of the industry. The biggest obstacle right now is the fact that the industry as a whole is so slow; there's even fewer opportunities than normal to get started, because everyone is looking even more closely at experience.
If you'd like, send me your resume, and I'll pass it on to some of my contacts and see where it goes from there. I do not currently have any openings, but do anticipate some in the coming months. No guarantees, thanks to our wonderfully dependable (haha) industry right now, but it's not going to cost you the $1500-$1800 that a course will! (And, by the way, they don't guarantee you anything either.)
Whatever you decide, good luck! "It's a jungle out there."
> I want to splice fiber but I need to know what certification should I try to get? 3M? ETA? Or would just taking a couple of classes of FO do. My point is I don't want to spend a lot of money on training if I'm not going to get a job with thier certification. Someone help me on this !!!!! Thanks in advance!!!!!!
