What kind of splicer are you using? I have gotten loss of less than 4db by experimenting with re-arcing using a manual fusion splicer and have had similar results with special programs using automatic splicers. I haven't done this for cable modems, but modal dispersion effects will be similar in appearance to CLI from what I have seen before. Adapting jumpers are available but, costly for cutting edge compesation. Let us know how it works...
