Dont forget about the fiber!! My system is now beginning to see the effects of a lack of QC behind our fiber contractors...things like unspliced dark fibers (spares), poor splice quality, crossed fibers, etc... talk about time consuming!! Be sure to follow up all splice jobs with a comprehensive OTDR and link-loss report.
Just my two and a half cents...
> I haven't seen many software programs that will help in the Quality Control of a fiber/coax construction-upgrade...I have developed spreadsheets that can assist you greatly by crunching the numbers and giving valuable data at your fingertips......This has helped me but being a tester I firmly believe that if you set a standard and put it in writing on how you want your attachments, placements and grounding. This will eliminate spec of the day scenarios that is the start of loss of standardazation. Then after you have met all the eye appealing stuff you have to get to the real meat of Proof-of -Performance. How does my cable plant stack up to FCC standards and My higher standards. The only way to do that is to test it. You have to test and document every ounce of spectrum in your system.c/n,cso,ctb,hum,v/a ratio, in channel response,24hr variation max/min,Qam,bert,return spectrum sweep and ingress testing........I have seen alot of systems built and the number one cause of a bad upgrade is the MSO not Q.C.ing the contractors.......And I'm a Contractor!!!

I'm looking for feedback, specifically concerning any software programs and comprehensive, well organized systems that may be in use by independant quality control contractors. I have seen many quality control sytems that do nothing more than stack-up paperwork and point the finger at the responsible contractor. The cable system is still left trashed and industry construction standards are compromised everywhere. Is anyone doing a post construction/upgrade QC walkthrough that does more and gives more to the cable system operator than just pointing a finger at sub-standard construction installations?
