Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-cable or anything. I was just stating a fact. Satellite dishes are growing at a faster rate than cable and are on pace to have an equal number of subscribers within a few years. Both systems have their flaws and I do believe you do hear those complaints, however, a well-mounted and well-pointed dish will almost never go out. Only in the most extreme weather, perhaps once or twice a year for a short time (minutes, not hours) here in MO. It will not go out any more than cable does. Add a dish cover and it may never go out. The problem is almost always that the customer self installed or, unfortunately, had a hack for an installer. As far as hacks go, satellite providers are now requiring courses and certifications. As far as local channels, it’s a spectrum issue and if dish and directv merge all areas will get local channels. An additional monthly charge only applies for an additional box, just like cable, not for an additional TV. As for speed, the speed is the same, or in newer boxes, faster than a digital box. And there’s no arguing that satellite offers a consistently excellent picture that is far superior to most cable service (true digital, not what cable “calls” digital).

Don’t forget price. Yes a service call costs $45 or so, but service on a well installed dish is extremely rare and at $23 a month less than digital cable, it’s well worth it! I can get true digital satellite with 2 boxes, local channels, and more channels at the same price as basic expanded in my area. If I were to pay the same as cable charges for one digital box with no premium channels, I would get 2 boxes, 6 HBO’s, 5 ShowTime’s, 4 Stars, and 6 Encore’s,

The new dish box has a satellite internet modem built in that can be connected to your computer or used on your TV and the next generation will probably have a tivo type system built in also.

I hope I don’t sound like I’m dogging cable. I’m just trying to let everyone who’s not involved with dish’s know that there’s a change on the horizon and if direcTV and dish merge, watch out. With their combined spectrum they will offer much much more than cable for much less. I just hope you are aware of the market and prepare to change. Change is inevitable in all industries and cable’s is coming very very soon.
