I guest I said something wrong....You do not have to turn off the carrier to measure CSO you have to removed the carrier for CTB only, the resson been CTB appers right under the carrier, and NCTA wrote a rue where you measure CTB in a 10 KHz bandwidth.

In all case you need to measure CTB and CSO on a none modulated signal (CW)

In general you need to install a 1 MHz band past filter between the system and the spectrum analyzer, that way you`ll only see distortion from the system and none from the spectrum analyzer.
