The o-rings on fittings were often defective, and sometimes got caught between the fitting and the backnut and were twisted and crushed. This happened to me about 2 to 3 times a day while splicing (even using W-D 40). I took the time to replace every single one that became damaged, but I would estimate that the vast majority of hack splicers out in the field would not even care if every o-ring was damaged, and there is no way that they would take the time to replace them. Using heatshrink totally eliminates most water damage, and makes the splicing moron proof.
