Re: Buckster

It's certainly true that Jefferson was not the only founding father, which is why I also quoted Adams and Madison.  All 3 played important roles in the forming of our government and, in particular the constitution.

I also mentioned Washington and Franklin, as did you.

Here's some more to read:

Washington: http://www.infidels.org/library/historical/john_remsburg/six_historic_americans/chapter_3.html

Franklin: http://www.infidels.org/library/historical/john_remsburg/six_historic_americans/chapter_4.html

The point is simply this: Were the founding fathers deeply religious Christians who were out to set up a Christian nation, as alluded to by the religious right's version of history?

I say they were not.

Their writings from the time period seem to support me on this as well as the very fact that we have lived with a government that for over 200 years has kept church and state seperated.  For that same time period, the Supreme Court has upheld this seperation time and again.  History shows that religious entities were trying to wriggle a way through the constitution from it's inception with little success.  That was during the period when our founding fathers still were in place to make changes, if they thought it was not doing what they intended.  They did not.  They left it standing as a "wall" as Jefferson put it.  One can only conclude then, that that is EXACTLY what they intended from it's inception.
